One month before Sochi and already Canadians have one heck of an Olympic triumph to cheer about.
Nine months after being told she wasn’t a legitimate Olympic contender and was dropped from the Canadian ski team, Larisa Yurkiw punched her ticket to Sochi in dramatic fashion Saturday.
Skiing independently after raising $150,000 last summer to prolong her career and keep her faint Olympic dreams alive, the 25-year-old Owen Sound, Ont., native posted a career-best result with a sixth-place downhill finish in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria.
Combined with her season-opening seventh at Lake Louise, the Austrian result gives her two top-12 finishes — both firsts in her injury-ravaged career — gaining her entry to her first Olympics.
